Please join us for the Joint Opening Receptions of the Riverside Art Museum's Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA exhibition, Myth and Mirage: Inland Southern California, Birthplace of the Spanish Colonial Revival, and UCR ARTSblock's PST: LA/LA exhibition, Mundos Alternos: Art and Science Fiction in the Americas, on Saturday, September 30, 2017, from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.

PST: LA/LA is a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles and takes place from September 2017 through January 2018 at more than 70 cultural institutions across Southern California.

Myth and Mirage tours us through the Inland Southern California SCR landscape with its rich stylistic details and exoticized architectural forms, and how mythmakers from the 1880s through the 1930s fabricated a marketable past that was European and civilized to sell the mirage of wealth and paradise to Anglo settlers. The exhibit considers how the role of ethnic Mexicans in SCR architecture has been largely omitted from the historical record, despite the integral part their labor and production of building materials were to the architectural history of the Inland Empire and Southern California. Myth and Mirage also takes into account the implications of the “refried” SCR of the postmodern era. Major support for Myth and Mirage and its publication is provided through grants from the Getty Foundation.

UCR ARTSblock is presenting a PST: LA/LA exhibition of their own, Mundos Alternos: Art and Science Fiction in the Americas. A wide-ranging survey exhibition, it brings together contemporary artists from across the Americas who have tapped into science fiction’s capacity to imagine new realities, both utopian and dystopian. Science fiction offers a unique artistic landscape in which to explore the colonial enterprise that shaped the Americas and to present alternative perspectives speculating on the past and the future. In the works featured in the exhibition, most created in the last two decades, artists employ the imagery of science fiction to suggest diverse modes of existence and represent “alienating” ways of being in the world. Mundos Alternos brings into dialogue the work of international artists from across Latin America with Latino artists from throughout the US. Drawing on UCR’s strong faculty and collections in science fiction, ARTSblock offers a groundbreaking account of the intersections among science fiction, techno-culture, and the visual arts. Major support for Mundos Alternos and its publication is provided through grants from the Getty Foundation.

Please join us for our Joint Opening Reception. Both locations will be open and free to the public to celebrate our respective PST: LA/LA exhibitions!
